Heroes Now Likely to be Canceled?
After all the positive news we received regarding the return of Heroes for a 5th season run, more and more reports are coming in stating the opposite. Vulture.com broke the news yesterday morning with the headline “Vulture Learns NBC Is Likely to Cancel Heroes“. If that wasn’t enough the story spread like wildfire and was picked up by many news outlets. Our good friends over at TheODI.com quickly reached out to their NBC contacts. While NBC expressed their concern for this information being out there, they did say “It does not look good, BUT there is still a chance for Season 5.” Furthermore Grunberg had an interesting tweet this morning “The Fat Lady is doing her vocal warm-ups!!” I’m not sure if this applies to the Heroes situation but it’s worth mentioning.
While the ratings have been on a steady decline since early on in the 3rd season, the community has always been strong. International and domestic DVD sales have been tremendous for every volume of the series. Heroes was the number one downloaded show (albeit illegally) beating the likes of “Lost”, “Dexter” and “House”. Simply going off of Nielsen ratings, the immediate reaction after last season was that Heroes wouldn’t live to see another day. That started to change and we were hearing a lot of encouraging news in favor of Heroes coming back. More and more steam picked up and it appeared we would at least get one more run of the show. Unfortunately NBC is in a really bad spot right now and they are trying to rebuild their prime-time line up. Angela Bromstad (NBC Prime time president) has said from the beginning that NBC had a tremendous amount of pilots to review and that the fate of Heroes could be decided by their interest in those pilots. With J.J. Abram’s new series (”Undercovers”) being picked up and a slew of other new pilots being green lighted by NBC, it would appear that the chances for Heroes returning are looking more and more grim. I do want to point out that the Vulture.com article does imply that if Heroes doesn’t return for a 5th season there is the chance of a 2 or 4 hour movie.
With all this said, nothing has been officially decided or communicated by NBC. At least nothing that’s been made public, so we still have some hope. We know they have their upfronts this Sunday where they sell advertising space for their Fall shows. At that time NBC will release their Fall lineup and we’ll probably know for sure if Heroes is coming back or not. Unless their Spring lineup is not included and we’re asked to a wait a bit longer…. While I’m sure most things have already been finalized for NBC, it can’t hurt to let them know how you feel as a fan of the show. The quickest way to do this is to send tweets to @NBC and express your love for the show. If you do send NBC a message, keep it professional and courteous. The Heroes community has always been the best so let’s hope for a surprise this weekend and maybe Heroes will be back along with the 10th Wonder podcast! We’ll keep you posted!
Everyone always talks about how a show does in the Nielsen ratings, but from what I can tell, it’s hardly a reliable system. Look at the original Star Trek. It was in danger of cancellation after the first season, but the fans united for a letter writing campaign, and NBC was flooded with about 29,000 pieces of fan mail in support of the series. And after the second season, (and a poor time slot change on NBC’s part), Star Trek was in danger of cancellation *again*, because of the Nielsen ratings, and *again* a massive letter writing campaign saved Star Trek with about 115,893 pieces of fan mail; and that doesn’t count the thousands of phone calls to the studio either. The point I guess I’m trying to make is that NBC should know by now that the Nielsen ratings don’t really properly reflect a show’s fan base. And after all the letters and emails and twitter campaigns we’ve seen in support of Heroes, I don’t understand how they don’t see that, and see that canceling Heroes is a mistake.
not only on USA, Heroes is a popular show (for downloads, DVD or watch on TV) in so many countries exist a really biggest community who watch and loves Heroes, and like fan from Latinoamerica i want see a 5th season.
They can’t stop it here!! Not now, when the powers have just been revealed to the world, it just can’t! It’s too interesting to see what happens!
I believe that the Nielsen ratings need to be overhauled to take in the new formats of viewing. It used to be that families would sit down in front of the TV as the only venue of entertainment coming into the home. Now with the age of technology as it is, families are watching these shows on the computer on their IPhones, and on dvd. I wonder if the numbers for Heroes would look differently when considering these different platforms of viewing? I like Heroes, I like that there was some character development. It wasn’t something that was done in a season and wrapped up in a pretty bow at the end of it. There are a lot more stories to be told with this program. I really hope that if it doesn’t stay as a line up that perhaps there would be some more special programming for the fan base that perhaps we would get some movies through out the next fall and spring seasons. Perhaps after some failed new series we could bring back the show in a season format again.
I loved season one of this show, but I’m sad to say I couldn’t even watch season 4.
Here’s something that could have saved this show and something all shows can learn from: Don’t do something if you don’t want it done!
Don’t kill a character if you’re just going to bring them back. Don’t give someone powers if you’re just going to take them away. Likewise, don’t take away powers if you’re just going to give them back.
I’m all for progress and evolving story-lines. When shows continuously keep doing things and undoing them I feel like they are betraying my trust in them. It makes anything they do in the future seem pointless since they have an established past of reversing coarse at any moment.
Once writers betray the trust of the audience like that, I don’t think there’s anyway to get it back.
It seems logical that moving Heroes to USA or Bravo (NBC Universal owned) makes more sense than canceling it altogether. As clearly established, Heroes has a vast and loyal following. It would be a shame to abandon those followers. I think Heroes would fit in great with USA’s “Characters Welcome” mantra. This move could take some of the ratings pressure it has from being in NBC’s primetime slot.

Rob -Uhm, do you ever watch Lost? I’m going go out on a limb and say that you do. I love both shows and can not understand this notion that L… Never mind, this is about Heroes. Sorry to assume anyway.
Oh Heroes! I will be crushed if this happens! It’s not a perfect show but it’s the show that I love. It entertained me from week to week and I can’t imagine it going away. How can anyone argue with people who say they love something? They’re my feelings. People can’t tell me what I can’t do (hehe). Removing Peter’s powers was one of the biggest mistakes in my opinion but i haven’t lost faith in the show. I will definitely be sending messages to NBC
We’ll know more on Sunday. Until then my fingers and toes are crossed.
@Jessica I wouldn’t say that Lost producers have never made a mistake, but I carnally think they did a better job then the Heroes producers.

Maybe I’ll Netflix Season 4 sometime. So much on the show that I do like and other things I want to like, but they just make it too hard for me to enjoy! :p
