A Theory I think is possible is that Peter still retains and absorbs powers but still like a sponge but the way he does that is different. The touch to touch contact would be more logical because he could sift through the powers he would want to use. An example of this in end of clear and present danger he is hanging on now with his flight and strength he could maintain two powers.

If he can only have one power at a time i would seriously lose a lot of interest in the character. Unless it wasn’t permanent.
